Have you ever carried the weight of guilt that just plagues you? Consider the Apostle Peter. The man who claimed he would die for Jesus. The man who brought a sword to the Garden of Gethsemane. The man who followed Jesus right into the courtyard of the place where Jesus was being tried. And then for whatever reason, Peter disowns Jesus. Now put yourself in his shoes and from a distance you are watching Jesus’ crucifixion. If it were me I’d feel like a knife was sticking into my heart. In John 21 we find Jesus, after His resurrection, forgiving Peter and commissioning Him into a life of service. However, I’m sure on those dark nights when he was alone, his thoughts went back to that day of Jesus’ crucifixion. Wondering about why things had to go they way they did. Yet, when he considers the love and compassion demonstrated on the cross. It must have given Peter a deep sense of recommitment. Jesus forgave Peter and gave him a brand new start.
