In November 2005 my mother-in-law, Lois Wells, took my family on a wonderful trip to the Grand Canyon. My sons were teenagers and this is one of those memorable experiences as a family I’ll never forget. We spent the night there and in the evening we had dinner at a restaurant with a beautiful view of the canyon. However, at night that canyon is really dark. In fact it is pitch black. Complete darkness accept for a single campfire way off in the distance. I don’t think its even legal to do that any more. However, the sight impressed me. How one little light can make such a difference. Light can cut right through darkness. One candle in a dark room can make all the difference. John 1:4-5 tells us that, “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” This song conveys that idea that if we let our light shine that it makes a huge difference in the world around us. I liked using this song at our Christmas Eve service for the candle lighting service. As each one lighted their neighbor’s candle it brightens the whole room. Let your light shine!
