Communion Unity Song

One of the most significant acts of unity in the Church is in sharing Communion. Believers all over the world celebrate communion. It is the great reminder for all of us that Christ’s death is the reason we have forgiveness of sin. Communion is the one symbolic act that all Christians, no matter their theology, share. I had looked for a song that would remind us as a congregation how we are unified in the body of Christ. Not finding one, I decided to write one. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one. Christ longs for His church to be one as well. ^{22 “}I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— ²³I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me” (John 17:22-23 NIV).

I wrote this song to celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. I wanted to capture the excitement of that day. When working on the Arimathean I felt this was just perfect to use for that scene. I still visualize the throng of people and the children dancing and jumping up and down with excitement. The King has arrived!

Writing this song was once again my imagination working overtime. The thought that Joseph could set by and say nothing seemed counterintuitive. The Bible narrative doesn’t say if Joseph said anything during the arguing over Jesus. Yet, I can’t help but feel that Joseph would have said something. This is my expression of what he might have said.

Years ago in Oceanside, CA, I preached a Sunday sermon talking about Joseph of Arimathea. It captivated my heart and imagination thinking about being the one who carried Jesus’ body off the cross. Consider that Joseph was not only a member of the Sanhedrin but also a believer in Jesus as Messiah. What a dramatic and deep emotional conflict must have been going on in his heart. Carrying the body of the one you believed would restore Israel to a global power and bring justice back to the land. Now he’s dead and your taking his bloody, beaten, and dead body off of a cross. The cruelest of executions.

Later, after the resurrection, Joseph must have looked back and realized that he had carried and embalmed Jesus’ body only to know that Christ was no longer dead. That He had risen from the grave and now was Joseph’s savior. “I carried his body, and now he carries me.” To me that is deeply dramatic and powerful.

I wrote the lyrics of this song on a flight home from Phoenix, AZ. After a difficult Pastoral transition my wife and I began attending a new church as layman. I never anticipated the emotional feelings that would happen in my heart by going through such an ending of my pastoral career. I discovered just how much I needed my brothers and sisters in Christ. I’ve always loved the Church. Even my last congregation was filled with wonderful people. To date a group of us meet monthly for brunch. This song demonstrated our need for each other. No matter who you are you need other people in your life to be there when you’re hurting. Also, you need to be there for others. Our mutual caring for each other is how the love of Christ is lived out.

I wrote this song not long after a VBS at our church in Oceanside, CA. The Church was called “Del Oro Hills Community Church.” A Church I pastored for 16 years. Over the years I had noticed so many who had shared their lives through ministry. I could see Jesus working in them to bless others. To me it became the tangible face of Jesus. As they share their time, money, and love; you could see the impact in other’s lives. “I Saw Jesus” is about how an authentic Christian lives out his/her faith in the little everyday things that they do. The most convincing reason for a person to believe in Jesus is what they see in the life of a true and authentic Christian.

Inspiration can come from some unreal places. While looking for pictures for a powerpoint for a sermon. I ran across the statement, “It Wasn’t the Nails.” I’m sure it was for another preacher’s sermon. The phrase caught my attention and I began thinking of how true it was. The nails couldn’t forcibly hold Jesus on the cross. He was there because of His love for us. Jesus chose to die on our behalf. The cruelty and horror of the cross wasn’t enough to keep Jesus from saving you and me. Thank you Jesus for your sacrifice for each of us. May Jesus Christ be praised.

Jesus is Alive

Put yourself in the place of the disciples. Or better yet, in the place of the women who went to the tomb to finish embalming Jesus. The shock and the surprise when they see the stone rolled away and an angel sitting on top of it. I’m glad none of them had a serious heart condition. To discover the one you loved so dearly and thought was dead and come to find he’s alive. What an emotional rollercoaster ride. From shear dispare to soaring joy. My guess is that they were speechless at first. Even though Jesus told them several times that he would rise on the third day, they still just couldn’t comprehend it. Then seeing the amazed and disbelieving faces of the disciples. When Peter and John ran to the tomb to discover that the women were right. That was a moment in time they will never forget. All that Jesus had said was true and He has returned from the dead. Jesus is alive!!!

No One Goes It Alone

Years ago I had taken a few guitar lessons where the teacher taught me how to do a pentatonic scale on the guitar. The sound fascinated me. At the same time I was preaching a series on unity and the song lyrics just flowed while I was sitting and having lunch at a restaurant. I had in mind an old sermon illustration where the Pastor was visiting a church member who had stopped attending worship. The member asked “Why do I need to attend Church?” The pastor stood up and went to the man’s fire place as if to warm himself by the fire. The pastor took a poker and moved one of the burning embers to the side of the fireplace. He just stood there and watched it grow cold. The pastor commented, “Just like this ember grows cold so do we as Christians when we remove ourselves from the fellowship of other Christians. To keep the fire of Christ alive in us we need each other’s encouragement and accountability.” No one can walk this life in Christ alone.
