When you’re preaching through the Fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) its hard to find music to go with each of the fruits. As I searched for an appropriate song I felt inspired to write my own. When we experience the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives we discover these fruits surface in such amazing ways. It is my prayer that each of us allow God’s goodness to permiate our lives each day. The world would be a much better place if all of us allowed God’s goodness in us.

I wrote this song as a help to my Bible Study group to memorize scripture. As I began working on it I was inspired by the story of Joseph forgiving his brothers who years earlier tried to kill him. Genesis 50:20 demonstrates God’s influence in a man who realizes God’s work in his life. What was meant for harm became God’s pathway to a deeper understanding to God’s blessings.

Words of Grace

Words are powerful. What we say and how we say it can lift someone’s spirit or trash their self-esteem. As I was writing this song I was thinking of the passages in Proverbs when talking about our speech. I’ve loved the tune O Waly Waly most of my life. I loved the melody but really didn’t understand the song itself. It has been put to so many different lyrics. I used the melody of O Waly Waly for the verse and wrote a chorus in a similar style. The graceful melody lent itself to the emotional state of the 2nd verse “why do we fight and quarrel so?” My prayer is that we think about our words before we speak them so that they turn out to be Words of Grace.

As Jesus’ ministry progressed and the miracles became known, I’m sure people began to ask this questions, “Who is this man?” Even the disciples when Jesus calmed the storm at sea asked, “Who is this man?” Even today people make all kinds of assumptions and they still ask, “Who is this man?” It is my hope that all will discover who Jesus is and allow Him to change their hearts.

While I was serving as a worship leader at the Vancouver Church in Vancouver, WA, we were studying a book on prayer. Pastor Chris Kainu was encouraging the church to gather for prayer through prayer summits and the use of a special designated prayer room. I was moved at the thought of our needing to change the status quo of our world through prayer. Too often we neglect to pray and I believe we miss out on what God has for us when we don’t pray. This song is meant to encourage your prayer life.

When Morning Comes

The night after Jesus was crucified must have been horrific. That Saturday night, the day of Sabbath, had to be frightening since you didn’t know what the Roman soldiers or Jewish Leadership would. Realizing that the Rabbi you loved was now laying dead in a borrowed tomb. I’m sure the grief was overwhelming. Laying in bed at night trying to sleep. But sleep just eludes you. You think of the morning and can imagine the sun shining, birds singing, and everyone going about their day as if nothing had happened. The sheer weight of grief just becomes unbearable. When you wake to go and visit the tomb the sun will greet you and the birds will sing mocking all that you feel. This feeling was what this song is trying to convey.

We Will Reclaim

“We Will Reclam” was a title I picked up from a national ministers convention for the Church of God back in 2016. To me this song would have made a great theme song for the convention. I was inspired by the messages and the testimonies shared regarding how different churches were making a difference in their neighborhoods. God is still working and moving in the hearts and minds of the Church and when we are intune with the Holy Spirit we can reclaim what Satan has stolen: hearts and lives. Let’s get busy!

PS: I’ve made this into a Choral Anthem with Narration. Feel free to use this on a Sunday morning.

We Stand With You

Our church has a tradition of “laying on of hands” as a form of corporate prayer. A person who has requested the church to pray for them comes forward at the Pastor’s invitation. The congregation gathers around the person reaching out and laying their hands on the person or if they cannot get close enough to touch then they lay their hands on the person in front of them. As we lay hands we join together in prayer and ask for God’s intervention in the person’s life. I often wonder what visitors who are not use to this feel about this prayer gathering. Since this is a regular occurance we really don’t explain it, but instead just do it. After one occasion the Pastor ended his prayer and then said to the person, “We stand with you.” In my mind this seemed to sum up and explain why we do this. It is a tangible and visual sign of the congregation’s pledge to continue to pray for this person. I felt inspired to write this song as a teaching tool to help others to understand the significance of the Church practicing the “Laying On of Hand.”

Watch Out for This Boy

This song was not written based upon any biblical text but my own imagination. It occured to me that Joseph’s family was involved with the Sanhedrin for generations. Just as his father was a member of the Sanhedrin so he would become a member. If Joseph was near the age of Jesus, then his father might have been there when Jesus was 12 years old and talking to the priest in the temple. I’m sure Jesus would have left an impression on Joseph’s father if he were there. That’s what inspired this song.

As I wrote this song I was imagining Mary holding Jesus. She was rocking Him back and forth as mothers do. Singing softly to Him and loving Him. In my mind this is a lullaby that Mary could have sung to baby Jesus. Even though I sang this on the recording, I’m imagining a woman’s voice to sing Mary’s song. I would love for a woman to record this song. I altered the words of “O Holy Night.” I”m hoping you see the artistic expression and not one mucking up a Christmas favorite. This song is an intimate expression of a mother loving her baby.

The Bond of Perfectness

I discovered this hymn in our hymnal and saw that it had a powerful message for today. However, the melody and style were not for today. So, I reimagined this hymn with a different melody and harmonies. I don’t mean to commit sacrilege but I added a bridge section that I felt added to the over all message of the hymn. Listen carefully to the message that D.S. Warner was conveying to the church.

The Birth of Hope

Many of the songs that I included in this album “The Christmas Light” were songs inspired by my sermon preparation for the advent season. Thel song was written in 2016 for advent. I felt bringing in the carol, “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” would add a familiar Christmas feel as well as convey the essential meaning; the birth of Christ was the birth of hope. A living hope. Hallelujah, Christ has come.
