The term “Evening Light” is an old Church of God phrase referring to the thought that we are in the last days. Christ’s return is imminent. Our men’s quartet group decided to call ourselves, “The Evening Light Quartet.” I’m not sure if that is communicating that we are senior adults in the group and we are in our evening light phase of our lives, or if we are choosing to identify with the concept that Christ will be returning soon. I’m hoping its the later. I was inspired to write this song as both a meaningful quartet song as well as a theme song for our group. I’m still waiting to see if that idea will take. Let’s all be ready for Christ’s return. Be faithful in the meantime.

I’m Redeemed

After a few months of attending Lynchwood Church of God, Gresham, OR, I was invited to sing in a men’s quartet. I’ve not been a fan of Gospel Quartet music most of my life and have tried to avoid it whenever possible. However, after singing with these guys I’ve acquired a taste for it. In fact I’ve taken several of my own songs and arranged them for the group. This one was my first. It’s a testimony describing the redemptive work of Jesus in our lives. The wonderful change that comes from allowing Christ into our hearts. I hope this blesses your heart as it has blessed mine.

Love Became Real

All throughout history people have loved their spouses, children, and good friends. The scriptures are full of statements that say God’s love is everlasting. However, until love became tangible in the person of Jesus it may not have seemed so real. When the Father gave the gift of His Son Jesus to live among us, teach us, and even die for us. That’s when God’s love became real. Too often Christmas becomes more about the season instead of it being about Christ. Christmas is more than decorations, presents, or even family. It’s about the good news that God sent His only Son into the world to be the savior of the world.

Love Pierced the Darkness

For me one of the strongest metaphors in scripture is the contrast of light and darkness. The Gospel of John compares the life of Christ with light and stating that the darkness could not comprehend it (John 1:1-5). The life of Christ was the light for all mankind. God gave us the gift of His Son: who is light, life, and salvation. When Christ entered the dark world He pierced the darkness. God invaded our world to give us life. Love Pierced the Darkness!

Royalty in Training

This song was written out of the inspiration from a sermon I was working on. 2 Timothy 2:11-13 where Paul states that this is a trustworthy statement. He uses that saying about five times in his New Testament writings. Paul is drawing our attention to an important truth. In this case he’s telling us that if we are faithful and endure the reward is beyond imagination. If we die for Christ we will live with Christ. If we endure for Christ then we will reign with Christ. I’m still thinking through all of the implications of this verse but I’m so grateful to a God who will honor our faithfulness with such generosity. When I sang this at church a friend of mine said, “That would make a great quartet song.” So here it is. May this song inspire all of us to endure for Christ until the end.

The Beautiful City

During my time as Pastor of the Holladay Park Church of God in Portland OR, I became acquainted with Coralla Fritzler. She was still the church’s treasurer in her 90’s. A dear saint who deeply loved the Lord and the church. At age 15 (1940) she wrote a poem in response to her feelings regarding her then Pastor’s wife who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Coralla lived until she had turned 100. At her memorial service the family read her poem talking about heaven, that beautiful city. To honor her passing I thought it would be meaningful to put her song into a male quartet piece, which she loved. May this song remind you of the living hope we Christians have because of Christ’s sacrifice.
