Babylon Has Fallen

I wrote this song while preaching through the book of Revelation. I was working on someway to remember all the things that happen as a result of Babylon falling. I wrote it in a blues form since it seemed to be sad and victorious at the same time. It is both a warning and an invitation to the Church to be ready and to move forward. God’s justice will be seen at the end. Read in Revelation 17-18 to get the full story.

I plan to rerecord this with a lot more instrumentation. I keep hearing a vibrant Hammond Organ sound in the background. Oh yeah!

While preparing a sermon on Mark 9:14-29 I was moved by the desperateness of the father and the helplessness of the disciples. When the father asks Jesus to heal his son he says, “Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.” Many of us believe in God’s ability to heal and perform miracles. Yet, in the back of our minds there remains doubt. May this song encourage you to believe and trust in God’s divine wisdom and love to provide what is needed.

This song was inspired by Jesus’ words to Peter at the Last Supper in Luke 22:31-38. As I was thinking about being there. Being with Jesus in the final hours and to have Him say, “Satan has requested to sift you like wheat. But, I have prayed for you.” In fact the NASB says, “Satan has demanded to sift you like wheat.” What a terrifying thought. The imagery would terrify anyone. Peter’s response was to restate his loyalty. My mind went to to the thought of Jesus praying for me. I was humbled and encouraged. Following that I remembered how in Romans 8:27 the Holy Spirit promises to “intercede for God’s people.” I hope you find this encouraging to know that as you face difficult times that we have Jesus and the Holy Spirit praying for us. We have a wonderful Lord.

It all started a long time ago in a little town called Albany, OR. I was a minister of music and youth and from time to time I would try to write a song. Looking through the Psalms I found a verse that seemed to answer my lyric problem. Also, its great advice for each of us each day to find things to be thankful for and to remind ourselves of God’s faithfulness. Over the years this has become an anthem in my life to keep me mindful of God’s faithful and generous love.

King of the Ages

Just like “Babylon Has Fallen” this song was inspired while I was preaching through the book of Revelation. In Chapter 15:13-15 we find the “Song of Moses and the Lamb.” These verses celebrate the greatness of our God and His justice and holiness. I think this is a great worship song but also a wonderful statement of the underlying theme of Revelation. May God bless you as you worship with this song. Blessings!

I was preaching on 1 Corinthians 13 and felt it would be great to have a song that emphasised and summarized my sermon. Debbie Stephenson wrote this out for me. Not many pastors have a secretary who is as gifted as Debbie and is able to write out a song. This song has a wonderful challenge for each of us. To let love be our highest goal in life. At my church in Portland, OR, Holladay Park Church of God, I was working on a sermon series I called “Love, Learn, Live.” It was based on the scripture passage Philippians 1:9-11 from the Message Bible. It was my desire to help the message of that passage sink into each heart and soul. That it would be a great challenge for all of us to strive for. The Apostle Paul was praying these words for the church at Philippi and I was praying also for my congregation. “…that your love would flourish and that you will not only love much but well. Learn to love appropriately. You need to use your head and test your feelings so that your love is sincere and intelligent, not sentimental gush. Live a lover’s life, circumspect and exemplary, a life Jesus will be proud of: bountiful in fruits from the soul, making Jesus Christ attractive to all, getting everyone involved in the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:9-11 The Message Bible).

This song was written back in Oceanside, CA when I was preaching on the Ten Commandments. I wanted to express the idea that God is a jealous God and doesn’t like sharing our affections with anything or anyone else. It’s interesting the number of times God uses the word “Adultery” to convey His dismay with the Hebrew people and their choice to worship false gods. The first commandment is, “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3 NASB). You may not be worshiping known foreign gods but anything that steals your affections from God can be seen as having other gods in your life. My hope is that this song reminds you to put God first in all things. Even though we will have pain and struggles, life just goes better with God’s blessings! May this song encourage you to put God first above everything else. Blessings!

This song was inspired by the story of the Prophet Elisha and his servant found in 2 Kings 6:8-23. Here we find the servant in fear for his life when Elisha tells him to look again and prays for God to open his eyes. In the answer to that prayer the servant sees an army of angelic soldiers with blazing chariots surrounding the enemy. Too often we find ourselves surrounded by the enemy and not realize that God’s army is right there ready to fight for us. My hope is that this song encourages you to trust in the Lord in your difficult times. Blessings!

This song was written out of the inspiration from a sermon I was working on. 2 Timothy 2:11-13 where Paul states that this is a trustworthy statement. He uses that saying about five times in his New Testament writings. Paul is drawing our attention to an important truth. In this case he’s telling us that if we are faithful and endure the reward is beyond imagination. If we die for Christ we will live with Christ. If we endure for Christ then we will reign with Christ. I’m still thinking through all of the implications of this verse but I’m so grateful to a God who will honor our faithfulness with such generosity. When I sang this at church a friend of mine said, “That would make a great quartet song.” So here it is. May this song inspire all of us to endure for Christ until the end.
