I wrote this song while preaching through the book of Revelation. I was working on someway to remember all the things that happen as a result of Babylon falling. I wrote it in a blues form since it seemed to be sad and victorious at the same time. It is both a warning and an invitation to the Church to be ready and to move forward. God’s justice will be seen at the end. Read in Revelation 17-18 to get the full story.

I plan to rerecord this with a lot more instrumentation. I keep hearing a vibrant Hammond Organ sound in the background. Oh yeah!

Christmas In the Mirror

In the year of 1999 I had come to a point in my life where I was deciding on new goals for my life. I had dabbled in writing songs over the years prior but hadn’t worked at it seriously. I decided it was time I worked at being a composer. My first work was a Christmas musical. Writing 7 new songs, arranging 4 Christmas Carols, and writing a 4 scene play was quite a task. Add to it that I had never worked with notation software or recording software. In the period of six months I had gone from nothing to having a complete dramatic musical with choir and had created an accompaniment track. We performed it for our church that December in 1999. I was truly blessed by my church, Del Oro Hills Community Church, and the Lord to be patient with me in putting this major work together. This song was the theme song for the musical. The concept for the musical is simple. Imagine yourself getting ready in the morning and your thinking through your day while you are standing in front of a mirror. I don’t know about you but I can imagine there are times you talk to yourself and reflect on what has been happening in your life. This song speaks to the desire for Christ to be in control of your inner life and to bring peace into your heart. Something many long for at Christmas time. May Christ inspire you to a deeper walk with Him as you celebrate the Advent season. Blessings!

Communion Unity Song

One of the most significant acts of unity in the Church is in sharing Communion. Believers all over the world celebrate communion. It is the great reminder for all of us that Christ’s death is the reason we have forgiveness of sin. Communion is the one symbolic act that all Christians, no matter their theology, share. I had looked for a song that would remind us as a congregation how we are unified in the body of Christ. Not finding one, I decided to write one. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one. Christ longs for His church to be one as well. ^{22 “}I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— ²³I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me” (John 17:22-23 NIV).

Creator Create Something New In Me

Back in 2016 I was on Sabbatical staying at a borrowed home on the coast of Oregon. While I was there I was watching a Youtube of a sermon by Francis Chan. In this message he shared a story about a young college girl that he noticed worshiping at the college services. Each time he spoke at this college he noticed this young woman to be more deeply involved and more expressive in her worship of Jesus. After a few visits he asked her what was going on? How was it that she was more deeply involved with worship each time he saw her? The young woman simply stated that, “Each time I come to worship I ask the creator to create something new in me.” To keep our worship experiences fresh we need a similar attitude. Whenever our worship becomes routine and stagnant we need to ask God each time we enter into our worship of Him. That His Holy Spirit empower us to a deeper love and devotion towards Him. May our prayer be each time, “Creator create something new in me.”

Evening Light

The term “Evening Light” is an old Church of God phrase referring to the thought that we are in the last days. Christ’s return is imminent. Our men’s quartet group decided to call ourselves, “The Evening Light Quartet.” I’m not sure if that is communicating that we are senior adults in the group and we are in our evening light phase of our lives, or if we are choosing to identify with the concept that Christ will be returning soon. I’m hoping its the later. I was inspired to write this song as both a meaningful quartet song as well as a theme song for our group. I’m still waiting to see if that idea will take. Let’s all be ready for Christ’s return. Be faithful in the meantime.

How would you respond if an angel suddenly appeared before you? It seems in each case in the Bible the first words out of the Angel’s mouth is, “Fear not!” I’m not sure what kind of image comes to mind of what angel’s look like for you, but I’m sure with their sudden appearance there would be fear. I think it’s natural to be frightened by the power of God. Scripture teaches us that, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10 NIV). This song conveys the stories of those who encountered an angel and yet the love of God saw them through.

Foretold, Fulfilled, and Faithful

Back in 1997 I was preparing a sermon series for Advent when I notice that Sarah, Elizabeth, and Mary were all told of their impending pregnancies by an Angel. Sarah laughed when she heard the news. Elizabeth’s husband became mute until he named the child John. And Mary was visited by Gabriel and became the most blessed woman of all time. It’s amazing how God works in the most surprising ways. God foretold them before the they were pregnant, they’re great desires were fulfilled in each birth, and they were faithful in believing God’s news. Because of these women we have a spiritual nation, a witness to the light, and a savior of the world. God’s Word is true and we can believe in Him.

God Heard My Prayer

“God Heard My Prayer” was written back in 2017 when I was trying to work out the issue of God not always granting what I asked for in prayer. No matter how godly I thought the ask was there were times nothing happened. At that time our church was praying about whether to continue or close the church down. It was a difficult and stressful time. However, as I contemplated how good the Lord had been to us in so many ways it occured to me that God has a bigger plan. That God’s love just doesn’t vanish one day and appear the next. God always hears our prayers. Our job is to wait and trust. That may be difficult at the time, but God’s timing is perfect and one day you’ll understand.
